Adventure in NOLA 8/9-8/15, 2009

THE TRIP DOWN SET THE TONE FOR A COHESIVE CARING GROUP TO WORK AS A TEAM! We took a little time to get to know each other and then down to work...street car and walk (not 4 blocks!!) in the am heat and humitidy...but the moment we got to the schools and began to work, the heat and humidity no longer mattered. Moving books, scrubbing shelves and windows...chatting w/ staff and teachers...long days, then back on the street car to our home away from home for a shower and time to compare the days events...more bonding, and of-course some delicous New Orleans food!!
Three very memorable moments stand out for me...the first was when we laid eyes on a pit of a boiler room that was going to be used for one child in the special ed program...the second was when I saw the total devestation that took place in the 9th ward, and took time to stand on what was left of the original frail levy...the third when I held Lily, a small differently abled toddler, and placed my fingers along her spine, and OM'ed, as she hummed w/ me...giving her what appeared to be a few moments of peace in her twisted body...amazing, precious moments!!

The special ed room was transformed by several of us into a purple garden -a happy place...minus the mold on the walls! The 9th ward has some signs of hope springing up, thanks to many volunteer programs...and Lily...I will hold in my heart always!!!!

Getting to know this wonderful group, including the very poised young adults who joined us was a true joy!!! Namaste, sugar!!! Phylis Coleman, CMT,CYI,RP
